Somme France - Pozieres, The 1st Division Memorial

This view from the wooden platform at the edge of Pozieres shows the 1st Division memorial. It consists of a large stone obelisk surrounded by lawn and a neat hedge. It also has explanation plaques and a bronze Bastiaan plaque in both English and French. This memorial was built on top of K Trench, one of the first trenches captured at Pozieres by the Australians. The platform gives an idea of the view that would have been possible of the British lines in WW1 from the 'Gibralta' blockhouse behind it. The Germans would have been able to see clearly a long way into the distance and all the pre-battle preparations of the British troops. The Pozieres British Cemetery and Theipval Memorial can be seen in the distance.
